Dog runs in Astoria & Other Areas in New York
Off-leash dog parks and on-leash dog friendly trails are community centers that can provide your dogs the freedom to run in their own space with protection. We all know that most dogs love to be outside to play, socialize, exercise, sniff around and maybe even take a little nap while basking in the sun. Off leash dog parks can offer just as many benefits for humans as they do dogs. They facilitate friendly interactions among people, help them get to know their neighbors and gets them off their butts to grab a little extra vitamin D.
New to dog parks?
Check out a list of dog park etiquette listed below below.
The Bugsy Dog Run at Astoria Park
Bugsy Dog Run at Astoria Park is not an official dog run, as it is not funded or maintained by the city. It was created by a man named Tex who lives across the street, and named after his now deceased dog, Bugsy. He and his wife maintain the run by bringing water and bags daily. While this dog run is quite run down, its the only one in Astoria and many people come out and make the best of it.
Hunter's Point Dog Park - LIC
10,000 square feet, a new dog-friendly gravel surface, separate large and small dog areas, drinking fountains for pets.
Forest Park - Ridgewood
Park Lane South right off Woodhaven Boulevard. This is a nice large dog run with 2 seperate spaces, for large and small dogs. There is an obstacle course and plenty of space for dogs to run around. One of my favorites!
Underbridge Dog Run - Rego Park
There are 2 separate gated areas that separate large and small dogs. This is a nice community dog run, safe and well shaded in the summer. Right off the grand central at 64th ave, well hidden unless you know its there!
Sherry Park - Woodside
Located at 65th and Queens Boulevard. The dog run was just updated by the city and is looking better than ever! This is a very friendly community dog run, with tables and benches for you to hang out on while your dogs are playing. It now has a Drinking fountain for the dogs.
Lou Lodati Sunnyside Dog Run
Located in Sunnyside, Queens, the dog park features separate spaces for large and small pooches. Two double water fountains provide relief for dogs and their owners.
Little bay park run - Bayside
Cross Island Pkwy (Utopia Parkway), Located in Whitestone, Queens this dog run is on the water and parking is available nearby.
Tomkins Square Dog Run - East Village
Tomkins Square Dog Run is my favorite dog run! Located at Avenue A and 9th street. This dog run has 2 sections for small and large dogs. As many dog parks do, this one has swimming pool in the summer for the dogs to cool off in.
Dog Park Etiquette*
One gate open at a time:
Lots of dog parks have double gates for a reason. It's to keep the slippery little guys from running outside the enclosed areas.
Pick up after a dog:
Many dog parks provide bags, but some don't, so come prepared.
Stay off the phone:
Even the best dogs can misbeahve sometimes. A little bullying is ok, but sometimes fights break out and it's your job to keep the dogs safe.
Don't come with treats:
Dogs can smell from a mile away. Unless you want them all jumping all over you instead of playing, treats are a bad idea.
Make sure your dog is friendly:
Dogs at the dog park need to be friendly with other dogs, but with all humans, especially children.
Keep your dog off-leash:
Dogs on leashes can feel insecure, which can trigger fights that may not otherwise happen.
Make sure your dog is vaccinated:
You don't want your best friend to get sick with Parvo, Distemper, Gardia or worms.
*These are only some of the rules to keep in mind when visiting the dog park.
